News and Views from the Student Union
As our time draws to a close, we are looking back at a great year, making sure voices are heard and busy planning our last events as your Student Union.
In the past few months, we here at the Student Union have organised many events and worked hard on planning new ones. We’ve launched campaigns and heard feedback all with the aim of getting students voices heard.
Following our successful Winter Fair in December, we were able to donate £500 to homeless charity ‘Shelter’. We hope everyone that came and supported had a brilliant time and enjoyed themselves – our elves sure did! We once again want to extend our thanks to all that helped organise and put the event on, as well as the students that visited the event.
We also launched our voter registration campaign recently; this campaign aims to have more students registering to vote, so in the upcoming elections they will be able to participate. We arranged a discussion in tutor (giving information and guidelines on how to register) as well as putting up posters to try and motivate students to register. The campaign was successful, and we hope many students are now prepared for the upcoming elections. If you still have not registered and would like to, please visit – gov.uk (registering is quick and easy and all you need is your national insurance number).
We also conducted our termly student representative meetings, where we received views about college life from 6.1 and 6.2 perspectives, aiming to address problems faced by the student population at Esher as well as trying to find ways to enrich student life. Discussions included feeding back from our recent meeting with the college’s cafe supplier (trying to help shape it more to student needs), planning for the Summer Fair and trying to gauge what student interest would be in.
We also helped plan upcoming events such as Green Week at the college, where we worked alongside the College’s amazing Eco Commitee for a week of Eco-themed college missions, including the return of The Student Union’s Green Week clothes swap. It was a fantastic event and we loved being able to promote Green-causes (as well as snag some new threads). We also have further events on the horizon such as the end of year Summer Fair, which we are making exciting developments within the final parts of the planning stage. We hope to announce even more events soon!
As our time in the 23/24 Student Union draws closer to the end, we hope you have enjoyed the events we have put on (from Pizza and Ping Pong to our Winter and Summer Fairs) and look forward to the future with the next group of SU members.
Good luck to all the 6.1 students in this month’s SU Elections.
