Exploring Belgium and PhotoBrussels
Just before February half term, the Photography department took 19 second-year students to Brussels to attend PhotoBrussels.
Fiona Thomas, Photography Technician, reports.
PhotoBrussels is an established photography festival boasting nearly 60 participating galleries across the city. Throughout the trip, students engaged in gallery visits, attended insightful talks by gallery curators and exhibiting photographers, and embraced the opportunity to partake in sightseeing and immerse themselves in Belgian culture.
Second year student Zephyer had this to say about the trip:
“The photography trip to Belgium Brussels was an amazing experience! I was able to see different types of photography through each of the gallery trips, each gallery had a very informative speaker who was happy to talk about the work and how it was created. Specifically, the last gallery where we learnt a lot about the dark room. Everything was timed amazingly – we had plenty of time to do shoots, explore, see the galleries and eat.
I was quite anxious about going, but I’m so glad I did. Personally, it really pushed me outside my comfort zone. I took some amazing photos, and learnt a lot about street/documentary photography it also made me a lot more confident behind the camera. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to go on this trip. And I’d go again in a heartbeat.”
The Photography Department highly values the experiences and learning opportunities that both day trips and residential trips can offer to students. We firmly believe that the positive impact of these trips extends far beyond our students’ academic lives, and we look forward to running more gallery trips and residentials in the near future.
