The Student Environmental Committee is delighted to announce that they have been successful in achieving the Green Flag award for the second year, achieving the higher Merit award, a level up from last year.

Ed Jones, Biology Teacher and Sustainable Development Coordinator, reports.

The student group, led by Ewelina Zadzimska (the Student Union’s Eco and Sustainability Executive), who took over from Freddie Short in April, has had a busy year, reviewing and implementing the College’s Environmental Review and Action Plan. The group ran a successful Green Week in March.

A significant focus has been on developing the college’s environmental area, planting a wide range of species to attract pollinators, a new hedge and refilling our bird feeders throughout the winter months. Students have recently built new composting facilities, as well as rolling stationery recycling bins across the campus, meanwhile staff are trialling refillable whiteboard pens. The College has also installed additional solar panels and has nearly completed its five-year programme of replacing all lighting to lower LED energy bulbs.

The College’s Education for Sustainable Development Co-ordinator, Ed Jones said “We have had a productive year and are excited to roll out the Carbon Literacy Certificate to students this year, which is available to students as a Progression Pathway in their second year, and during Wider Skills Week at the end of the first year.”

We are looking forward to welcoming new 6.1 students to the Student Environmental Committee, which meets weekly, on Fridays at 12:50 in O203.
