Debating Matters qualifying round
Esher College participated in the qualifying round of debating matters on Tuesday 4th October, against Putney High and Emanuel School. Lucie Bloomfield and Rowena Duncan argued for the motion that medical data sharing is a threat to our privacy and Alec Masoapatali and Isabel Pullman argued that humanity should not fear advances in artificial intelligence. Both teams put on a great performance and faced a serious Paxman-style grilling from the judges, which included Sian Jarvis, a senior Reuters journalist and former TV news presenter, as well as various Doctors and Tech professionals. The teams held their own under pressure and in the end it was felt that Putney’s arguments were more coherently and consistently defended. The contestants did themselves, and the college proud, and we are sure they will all go on to great things!
