French A Level Students Hear Firsthand Account of Nazi-Occupied France
6.2 French A Level students had a unique opportunity to hear from local resident Marcel Ladenheim, a French-Jewish man. Speaking in French for an hour, Marcel shared his personal experiences of living under German occupation in Paris during the Second World War.
This unforgettable experience not only enriched students’ historical knowledge but also deepened their appreciation of the resilience and courage displayed during one of history’s darkest times.
Student Sarah C. reflected on his powerful testimony:
“Marcel was a young child during the occupation, spending the early years with his pregnant mother before being taken in by a brave young dancer, Olga, who risked her life to hide him from Nazi forces. It was incredibly moving to hear his memories of such a terrible and uncertain time. Understanding these real-life experiences—both his own and those of his parents—gave us a deeper perspective beyond what we’ve learned from textbooks. This knowledge will not only be invaluable in our exams but also serve as a reminder of the hardships so many endured in occupied France.”Ruby T. and Verity G. echoed these sentiments:
