6.2 French A Level students had a unique opportunity to hear from local resident Marcel Ladenheim, a French-Jewish man. Speaking in French for an hour, Marcel shared his personal experiences of living under German occupation in Paris during the Second World War.

This unforgettable experience not only enriched students’ historical knowledge but also deepened their appreciation of the resilience and courage displayed during one of history’s darkest times.

Student Sarah C. reflected on his powerful testimony:
“Marcel was a young child during the occupation, spending the early years with his pregnant mother before being taken in by a brave young dancer, Olga, who risked her life to hide him from Nazi forces. It was incredibly moving to hear his memories of such a terrible and uncertain time. Understanding these real-life experiences—both his own and those of his parents—gave us a deeper perspective beyond what we’ve learned from textbooks. This knowledge will not only be invaluable in our exams but also serve as a reminder of the hardships so many endured in occupied France.”

Ruby T. and Verity G. echoed these sentiments:
“Talking to Marcel today was a fantastic experience—not just because it connected to our studies, but because it gave us a deeper understanding of how the occupation affected those who lived through it. Having the chance to ask questions and hear personal insights made history feel more real. It was especially moving to learn about the incredible bravery of those who risked their lives to protect Jewish families.

Marcel’s emotions were still raw at the thought of the suffering endured by so many, and the students were moved at his testimony.

Catherine Wilks, Head of Foreign Languages, emphasised the significance of the visit:
“The photos and Marcel’s story helped students truly understand the realities of life in Nazi-occupied France, one of the key themes we study for French A Level.”
