Geography A Level students have been exploring the world this term, from understanding our coastlines to the impact of global superpowers.

Helen Humphreys, Head of Geography, reports.

Geopolitics Q&A with Tim Marshall

Second year Geographers enjoyed an exciting evening in the presence of bestselling author, Tim Marshall, last week at Ashtead Memorial Hall. Organised by Word on the Street, Ashtead’s independent bookstore, students were able to listen to a Q and A between Tim and ITN news presenter and journalist, Faye Barker.  His book Prisoners of Geography and its sequels, The Power of Geography and The Future of Geography, are international best sellers and tie in perfectly with our second-year curriculum on geopolitics when students learn about the reasons for the emergence of superpowers, their impacts on the global economy, the environment and relations between different states.

The evening wasn’t just about listening; audience participation was a highlight. Students tackled a geography-themed quiz and posed insightful questions on topics like the European Union, migration, artificial intelligence, and the USA’s future role in global security.

Witterings Field trip

A blustery day at the coast did not put off second year Geographers in their endeavours to understand beach process and the formation of sand dunes and salt marshes at the Witterings this term. Despite some mixed weather, students worked together to measure beach profiles, understand wave activity and survey sand dunes to see the importance of vegetation in stabilising the coastline in this lovely part of West Sussex.

Students were able to complete the final day of the four field trip days necessary to complete Geography A Level.

Well done to all!
