When Callum joined Esher in 2020, he was uncertain about his career path. It wasn’t until he attended a College careers fair that he heard about an apprenticeship scheme with Dexters Estate agents and discovered his interest in sales.

Fast forward to today, and Callum is now selling multi-million properties as a senior sales assistant with Dexters Estate Agents.

Why did you choose Esher Sixth Form College?

“I was drawn to the courses on offer and the sports coaching facilities. I knew Esher would offer me better opportunities and a supportive environment and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Esher. The teachers’ passion and enthusiasm made it easy for me to work hard and aim high.”

How did your teachers inspire you?

“Natasha, my Psychology teacher, was amazing, she helped turn my initial grade D into an A – which was a stand out moment for me. Honestly, I would not have done as well as I did without her. And my PE teachers, Dani and Alan were great, they were on top of all the content and they really pushed us and kept us on track during the practical performance assessment, again, without this I don’t think I would have achieved my A grade.”

You did PE A Level, what sport did you play at Esher?

“I played for the men’s basketball first team. We trained consistently, and our coach was fully invested, which really motivated us. Winning the tournament trophy was amazing and I loved being part of the team.”

What was your career path after Esher?

“Initially, I planned to take a gap year before starting university because I wasn’t sure about my course or university choice. Then at the careers fair at Esher, I heard about the apprenticeship scheme with Dexters Estate Agents.

It introduced me to the idea of working and earning money and really suited me after the intensity of A Levels. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. After finishing my A Levels, I reached out to them, arranged an interview, and submitted my CV. The recruitment process involved three interviews with the Directors and Managing Directors, and after the final interview, I was offered a position and started immediately. I was promoted twice within my first year, first to Junior Sales Consultant and then to Senior Sales Consultant. I discovered my niche as an Estate Agent and I haven’t looked back.

I’m still working for Dexters now, no two days are the same and I really enjoy the dynamic nature of the industry.”

What have been your career highlights so far?

“Selling a £2 million property on the river was a significant milestone for me. Additionally, my promotions and moving up the career ladder has been incredibly motivating. I love working with great clients and find it immensely satisfying when we find them their perfect property.”

What skills do you need for a career in property?

“Having a personable and approachable personality is key. Being able to hold engaging conversations is crucial, as the role involves daily interactions with clients and customers. If you’re motivated by earning money, enjoy speaking with customers, and want a career where every day is different, this is the perfect role for you.”

What sort of salary could they expect when starting out?

“As an apprentice, the starting salary is approximately £2,100 per month.”

What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

“Stop chasing after things that drift away. Focus on recognising and harnessing your strengths, and opportunities will naturally come your way.”

What is your favourite chocolate bar and why?

“Galaxy chocolate bars are my favourite. The smooth and rich texture is irresistible!”
