Escaping the cold and grey of a wet summer in London, students from the Politics Department embarked on a six-day educational trip to sunny Berlin as part of Wider Skills Week.

Brandenburg Gate

The excursion offered an immersive experience into the politics, history, and culture of the German capital.

The itinerary included several walks and bike tours focused on the Cold War era, culminating in a visit to the notorious East German Stasi Prison. Here, students examined the transition of regimes from authoritarianism to democracy. The group also toured the Bundestag and the German Parliament, to explore the similarities and differences between the parliamentary systems of Germany and the UK.

In anticipation of England’s semi-final match against the Netherlands, the students visited the historic Olympic Stadium, the venue for the Euro 2024 final on Sunday. The trip also featured a seminar on the terror of the Nazi regime, a refreshing lake swim, and a full-day excursion to the picturesque Sanssouci Park and palaces in Potsdam.

This enriching experience provided the students with a deeper understanding of Germany’s political landscape and historical heritage, all while enjoying the vibrant culture of Berlin.
